Ananya Annual Report 2010
ANANYA TRUST
TWELFTH ANNUAL REPORT
2009-2010
INTRODUCTION
The year 2008-2009 ended with a major transition in the life of Ananya with the exam fever reaching a high pitch. Organizationally, a fresh perspective emerged this year when we saw children growing up emotionally and academically. A batch of seven children graduated from school, 4 of whom are pursuing higher education and the others have started working. A larger group of 12 students were all set to enroll for the NIOS examinations. We spent many Monday morning meetings debating several issues: Were we becoming just like other schools where examinations are the be-all and end-all of schooling? Was learning at Ananya becoming “main stream” and text book oriented? Do we (and should we) encourage children to sit for exams? What happens to those children who are not capable of handling the pressures associated with exams? Are we also becoming a cog in the fight for credentialing?
What follows is an account of our journey into 2010 during which we spent a lot of time and energy encouraging the use of the multi-intelligence capacities of the children and making it a part of our daily lesson plans. We also spent numerous hours trying to find answers to the various questions that kept arising.
What is unique about this issue of the Annual report is that many people have contributed to the writing of this report. We are extremely grateful for all your contributions and efforts.
Commencement of the session 2009-2010
The year’s session commenced on 1 June with a staff review meeting for:
· reviewing the work done
· assessing children's progress
· regrouping children
· planning ahead for the next academic year.
The salient features of the grouping this year was that the international volunteers inspired us to name our students groups after common currencies used in the world. The campus often had the atmosphere of a global trading centre with various currencies (groups) changing hands amongst teachers.
BAHT | FRANC | POUND | EURO | YEN | LIRA | PESO | RUPEE |
Sharad.V | Kanna | Govindraj | Durga | Aruna | Rajesh | Krishna | |
Sowmya | Murali | Suresh | Jayanthi | Taiamma | Ajay | Amarjyothi | Kaushik |

While the names of the groups change every year and the children are regrouped according to their progress in the past year, volunteers come for short term and long term one thing that continues to remain the same most of the time is the daily routine in the life of a resident Ananyaite. In the course of the day, we ensure that there is a good balance between play time and study time; structured activities and time for free play, adequate time to exercise the body, mind and soul. The children reside in the Ananya campus from Monday to Friday, and it is quite a challenge to ensure that the children are fed nutritious meals, receive enough quality time with the teachers, and learning takes place all in an atmosphere free from pressures and deadlines.

learning through culture
A number of cultural activities were organized as part of our multi-intelligence approach to enrich our childrens’ knowledge in diverse fields, and to enable them to develop team spirit. Some of these were:
Puppetry
Under the direction of Rohit Bhatia from Delhi, children worked on all aspects of the puppet show, starting from script writing, costumes designing to finally presenting the show. Here below are some pictures of our children involved in other activities of puppetry:

A Report of a Puppet Show
In November, Rohit Bhatia, our resource person for puppetry, returned to Ananya for a resumption of the school’s puppetry programme. In order to showcase our children’s’ talent, as well as to raise funds for the school, we decided to conduct an ambitious two-week puppet festival. Practice commenced in full swing preparing for a special puppet show on Children’s Day, at Gayan Samaja. Our sincere thanks to Saldo and Serge for organizing the show successfully.
Entrance of Gayan Samaj
November 14, 2009.
The D day for the first public performance by the kids, ‘Hope for the Flowers’. The children got into the school Bolero and headed towards Gayan Samaj. Some were very quiet, some nervous, others talkative, but all were sure they would put in their best performance. The show received a lot of applause and there were cries of ‘Super’ and ‘Wow’ from the children sitting in the audience. It was a great show and with the special director’s touch, it turned out to be almost professional.
The children were in high spirits on the drive back to Ananya after the great performance. They were looking forward to their run the next day.

Music and Dance Workshop
In June, Divya, Aditi and Yashna conducted a three-week music and dance session in the afternoons which ended with a performance for the benefit of the staff, students and special invitees.
New School Song
Valentina and Rohit wrote the lyrics and composed the music for our new school song during the Puppet workshops. The whole school was humming the tune and practicing in between classes. Bhavani and Shubha wrote the lyrics in Kannada while Vidhya did the Tamil version. We now have a tri-lingual school song!
Debates
We decided to adjourn the Monday meeting on January 4, 2010 and have a debating session with the children. We divided them into 2 groups and explained to them what it is to debate.
The topic was the ever debatable ‘Television: a boon or bane’. We settled for this simple topic to ensure active participation of children. As the initial restlessness subsided, a competitive spirit filled the air. In 15minutes the classroom was ringing with emphatic voices eager to make their point heard. There was a healthy discussion after the first round, though at times we had to interfere and calm the participants. We realized there were quite a lot of budding debaters among us.
Some interesting view points:
Television is a bane because you waste time sitting in front of it.
Television is a bane also because you cannot concentrate on whatever work you are doing.
Television is a boon because we learn multitasking. We watch TV while doing other things. We don’t waste time.
Campaigning against Smoking
As a part of their NIOS English project, the kids went on a rally around Gunjur, to campaign against the harmful effects of smoking,. They made placards and shouted slogans to create awareness among the bystanders. They came back with mixed emotions and wrote a report on their experience.
A few quotes from their notes:
“….I was shy at first but later on participated in the rally….”
“….People were looking at our placards. A man was ashamed and hid his cigarette….”
“….I got the chance to tell people how bad smoking can be….”
“….I hope some people understood and will quit smoking….”
HEALTH AND SPORTS
Karate, Running, and Puppetry have blended quite well into our curriculum and are not considered as extracurricular activities because they have enabled us to create avenues for the development of multi-intelligence capacities of our children. These activities have provided physical exercise, inculcated some discipline, hands-on training and a better understanding of how the body functions, which until now remained a textbook concept.
Children are taken for regular dental checkups every Wednesday. General health checkups are also conducted three times in the academic year.
Karate classes
Thanks to Sensei Manjula (Sensei Ni Rei: means “bow to the Sensei” in Japanese), along with Team Asha volunteers, Karate became a regular affair for Ananya kids. An entry in Team Asha’s blogspot on July 4 said that just as America celebrated its independence, we at Ananya took the first step towards self defense by striving for the Yellow Belt. All of us came out in flying colors. Banna qualified for the yellow belt in karate.
Running
Since the beginning of this year, Santosh of Runners’ High initiated running as a regular activity for our children, not only as a sports activity but also as a part of the academic curriculum. Runners High is an organization promoting running as a fitness activity for children and adults alike. On 8th Oct. Preeti and Santosh conducted experiments on effects of deep breathing on lung capacity. After the weekly run, the children of Franc and Euro groups observed how the pulse count increases with running and goes back to the original count within 2 minutes. Running as an activity has become a regular part of Thursday mornings.
Photo Opportunity with Team Asha after the Marathon
The children also participated in a number of Marathons during the year. On 31st May 2009 children ran enthusiastically for a cause by participating in the Bangalore Marathon. They assembled at Ananya and drove to UB City. After fulfilling their part as cheerleaders for the 10K runners, our children joined the race. Bannappa, Yellappa, Sharad, Basavaraj, Murli, Govindraj, Sharabayya, Praveen, Prasanna and Kanna proudly announced that they completed 10K while others did the 5K distance. Running has given a ‘high’ to our children they are now healthier with Runners’ High visiting the school twice a week. As team Asha put it: “This small team from Team Asha has bonded so well with Ananya that on Tuesdays and Saturdays we are invariably present at Ananya. The entire place has so much energy and we feel all the more part of Ananya.”
On June 20 the children participated in the Runners’ High Run at Valley School. George and Agnes joined the children in the run.
The campus was abuzz with numerous sporting events after 3 pm everyday. It is amazing to watch the 1 ½ acres of the coconut grove become an arena for all kinds of sports and games. Badminton, throw ball, volley ball, cricket, football, kho-kho--all find a pride of place along with our fast dying indigenous street games like hop scotch and ‘lagori’ (piling seven flat stones and hitting them with a ball to topple the pile and then putting it back together before being tagged) played by our little children.
Cricket
A report on the Friendly Cricket match between our own Ananya Ryders and Ananya Panthers!
It was an exciting weekend for us at Ananya. For those who were present, it was a great Saturday that was not dampened by the rain and clouds. In fact it seemed that the rain brought the much needed relief from the heat, and the clouds from the scorching sun. It was thus a perfect day for a cricket match between two rival teams of Ananya: Ananya Panthers and Ananya Ryders. This was the culmination of a two-day cricket camp organized by Ata Odanaata. The coaches for the camp were Dr. Raghu and Sheetal Suryavanshi.
The day began with a lot of excitement, getting the pitch ready, the stumps being positioned, the crease marked, bowlers marking the run up and the batsmen scrutinizing the ground (which included the permanently stationed fielders: the coconut trees!) for possibilities of hitting fours and sixes.
The match had all the trappings of a national level match: healthy competition, fierce rivalry, tears, cheering, jeering, match fixing, nail biting finish, inconsistent umpiring, chief guests, cameraman, distribution of certificates, the works. The only thing missing was a running commentary. (The position of a commentator is up for grabs!)
At the end of the game what mattered was that everyone had a good time, though the losers did not think so. The winning team’s jubilation was short lived when Kannan the captain saw his best friends from the opposite side break down. He said if he had known they would take it so badly, he would have lost the match! But all’s well that ends well. So, while there were disappointment and tears immediately after the end of the game, they bounced back in a truly sportsmanly spirit, and everything was back to normal. Soon the children were picking up the bat and ball and playing normal gully cricket. Praveen’s batting and Ramus’ bowling were highlights of the day.

Hockey
Kanna, Govindraj and Sharad Kumar participated in their first hockey tournament against St. Joseph’s school and St. Germaine school. Sadly, Hockey coaching has been discontinued, but this has not stopped our children from playing it in school sometimes even using coconut fronds as hockey sticks!
Table Tennis
Banna, Sharad and Suresh participated in a Table Tennis Tournament at Tumkur. Banna entered the 3rd round. Ata Odanaata conducted a TT camp and donated a table which is being used regularly.
Football
Thanks to our partner Dream a Dream, football continues to be a favourite sport among the 20 children who walk down eagerly to the SPT Sports Complex on Sarjapur Road twice a week. Along with regular football sessions, foot ball practice includes warming-up activities like running around the field, exercises, long stretches, and arranging matches.
counselling
Counseling is an on-going activity in Ananya that helps individual students to deal with the challenges they face and the life choices they seek to make. Here below are a few examples of counseling in action in Ananya:
· Ramchandra and Prem attended counseling sessions at TREDA to help them overcome the tobacco chewing habit.
· Shashi mentored Arun and Prasanna about volunteering and their role as volunteers at Ananya.
· To promote awareness about effects of intolerance, we read “The Butter Battle Book” by Dr. Suess. This was followed by discussions with Shashi as the moderator.
· Manju, another Ananya student who just passed his class X and has enrolled himself in Rani Sarla Devi College for the Senior secondary programme, had some words for wisdom for the students at Ananya:
“I now realize the three most important things I learnt at Ananya: one is not using a guide to study but reading the text, understanding it, and answering the questions by myself; second, showing respect for our teachers should not be by external gestures or actions but must come from within; and finally, the independence I had at Ananya has actually made me disciplined and I am able to concentrate. I am not as restless as my classmates.”
TEACHERS’ DAY CELEBRATIONS
Sept 5, 2009 was another red-letter day. Apart from celebrating ourselves as teachers, we honored the students who passed their NIOS exams.
It was a perfect day to honor the valued volunteers, Manjula, Balu, Narmada and Vinod who represented the Runner’s High team. They received certificates for giving their time and energy to take our children forward in different ways. Hema, Shashank and Vishal, our long time supporters and student mentors who have watched the children grow, shared with us the remarkable changes they saw in the children.
This being a special day for teachers, the flowers and leaves at Ananya were in grave danger as usual waiting to be clipped for the professional bouquets made by the flower arrangement team. But it seemed the children had other plans, they stopped with just handshakes and greetings. We understood what saved the flora in the campus when they gave each of us beautiful handmade cards and a potted plant, making the excitement stay longer and fresher.
It was a proud moment for Prasanna, Arun, Aishwarya, and Manjunath, when Ramdas placed black graduation caps on their heads and presented them with personalized certificates for successfully completing the NIOS exams.. Amid loud applause each shared their experiences at Ananya.
Next the Ananya alumni took the centre stage and received their certificates. Hamsa and Sridhar talked about their startup company, Innovative Contractors, that provides services for home maintenance. Dinesh works as an office boy and Nethra in a garment factory.
It only added more to the happy mood to see the confidence with which Sarsa and Prasanna made power point presentations. Sarsa had a lot to share about her trip to Sweden and Prasanna made a presentation on the puppetry workshop in school. This was followed by a puppet show by children on an adaptation of ‘Hansel and Gretel’. As usual, the children added more flavor and spice to the performance, making it hilarious.
First Parent-Teacher Meeting
The parents and teachers gathered to discuss the children’s performance during the first trimester of the school year. This year we had a long list of announcements for the parents since it was an eventful year. With the confidence boost from our graduates, we had more children who registered for the NIOS exams- Murli, Yellappa, Sharad, Shivashankar, Priya, Srilakshmi, Durga, Pallavi, Baslingamma, Premilla, Shashikala, Soumya, and Basavaraj.
Another announcement made in the meeting was on committees formed by children. The different committees are Student Welfare, Peace Keeping, Magic Maintenance, Red Cross, Event Management and Sports.
With Swine flu raging feverishly in Karnataka, the parents were briefed about precautions to be followed to keep children and family healthy and safe.
Before we dispersed for lunch, we had a great presentation of ‘Kihon’ which means the fundamentals of Karate. It was action packed with the children demonstrating moves in stimulated attacks.
The celebration ended (so we thought) with a sumptuous lunch and a noisy chat but we realized that the children had a surprise in store for us. There were a few energetic leg movements to the beats of ‘Jai Ho’, and ‘Beat it’ after which we finally wound up the celebrations.
Second Parent-Teacher Meeting
The meeting was held on December 21, 2009. It started with the usual greetings and discussion of individual progress reports of the children with the parents. They were informed about the happenings at school.
We celebrated Sowmya’s birthday, and it was also her last day of work at Ananya. Lakshmi, Sarsa’s mother, helped in the kitchen in Shivamma’s absence.
The parents and teachers then shared and discussed issues of common concern.
1. The parents were given the reason why the children were asked to commute daily for a week. We expressed our concern at the parents’ apathy and wondered why they had not bothered to find out the reason for the same. Some parents expressed shock and said they were unaware of the happenings, and had been told by the children that the school had declared a holiday for a week.
2. Some parents got emotional and a little angry about how the children were not telling them about the real situation in school. They were concerned about how children were more interested in dressing up and falling in love than concentrating on their studies.
3. The turn out by parents was low, so we asked the parents present how we could ensure better attendance.

Staff and Volunteers at Ananya
There were some major changes in the staff this year. Uddhav, our Maths teacher, decided to take a break and explore other possibilities. Sumedha taught Maths for a few months until the winter vacations. Maths teaching is now being shared by two volunteers, Santhosh and Rajesh. Agnes who had been with us for a year returned to Sweden in August after bidding us a tearful farewell. James Wozniak came in January 2010 as a long term volunteer for a year. Arun, a retired Air Force officer, and Rajesh, a software engineer, joined the Ananya team as active volunteers. Over the year we had many short term volunteers who involved themselves in various activities and brought with them a whole range of talents and experiences. It was a good cultural exposure for our children who learnt more from these interactions than they would have from books.
In July-August, Soundarya and Arshiya volunteered at Ananya for a month and a half. During the circle up time at 9-9.30 am, they engaged the children in news reading, conducting quizzes and discussions on various topics.
Ananya has offered scope for variegated learning activities to the students and to volunteers outside classes, including farming opportunities to Team Asha volunteers. George, along with the children, joined in the efforts. The volunteers especially enjoyed ploughing the field, planting ginger/bean sprouts, manuring and watering. The sense of achievement the volunteers and the children felt was a sight to behold.
We had a staff retreat in Ananya campus for 2 days in August. Ms. Meena Jain, Ms. Srilakshmi and Ms. Philomena were the resource persons who took sessions for us. An outcome of the workshop was a group effort at reviewing our vision and mission statements.
Suvi did a cartooning workshop with Sharad and Ramu
Lisa and Odette helping the children in making a map of Ananya
As part of our weekly Monday morning staff meetings, Drs. Dave and Fiona Pearson returned in January 2010 for the annual two-month sessions on training the staff in Counseling and Mentoring skills.
